"People are scared, and it's really sad. I just wish people could open their minds up and enjoy things. It's all for a laugh -- it's really not that big of a deal."

So said Adam Lambert, who defended his show-closing, edited-for-racy-content performance Sunday night at the American Music Awards.

If you didn't like it, tough cookies, Lambert told "Access Hollywood": "I believe in artistic freedom and expression. I believe in honoring the lyrics of a song, and those lyrics aren't really for everybody either."

During his song "For Your Entertainment," Lambert simulated a sex act with a male dancer and kissed his male keyboardist -- a move he described as spur-of-the-moment. ABC said more than 1,500 people called to complain, according to The Associated Press.

The performance was edited for the West Coast broadcast of the awards show, which Lambert called "discrimination." "Female pop artists have been doing things provocative like that for years," he said.

On Twitter Monday morning, Lambert wrote: "All hail freedom of expression and artistic integrity ... fans: I adore u."
