UNLIKELY singing sensation Susan Boyle has made music history with her debut album entering the ARIA and British charts at Number 1.

In Australia, her debut album I Dreamed A Dream has immediately gone platinum with more than 70,000 copies sold.

In the UK, Boyle's album has sold more copies in the first week than any other debut album in history. I Dreamed A Dream, the album title and name of the song that captured the world's attention, shifted more than 410,000 copies in the first week - a record for a debut album.

The album outsold the rest of the top five albums on the UK charts combined, and appears to be on course for similar success in the United States, Canada and New Zealand.

Her record has also become the biggest pre-ordered album in the history of online sales Amazon.
The 48-year-old church-going spinster who lives in a housing commission home in Scotland captured the world's attention eight months ago when she performed on TV's Britain's Got Talent contest.

When she first took to the stage, audiences giggled because of her unkempt frumpy appearance, but then Boyle began to sing and the music clip became the most downloaded in YouTube history and she was dubbed the Hairy Angel.

"It's fantastic," was all she would say yesterday of her album sales.

Her spokeswoman said the reaction was unbelievable.

"In America, Susan is already outselling Rihanna, Lady Gaga and 50 Cent with a projected first week sales figures of around a million, " her spokeswoman said.

"In doing so she is set to break Eminem's previous record for highest first week US sales this year."

Simon Cowell, the pop mogul who masterminded her rise from obscurity, said he was proud and delighted with her success.

"The success could not, not, have happened to a lovelier person," he said.

"She did it her way and made a dream come true. In Britain's Got Talent she opened her mouth and the world fell in love with her, which is why her album has been the fastest selling of any woman making her debut. She's amazing."
